about

'Natalia Beylis' 'Prophecy of the Beetle' maps the tiny world of an insect's journey through wood onto the landscape of the mind' - Abi Bliss, The Wire

'Prophecy Of The Beetle is downright surrealist in its games with scale and the way the non-musical will mutate into the musical and vice versa.' - Joe Muggs, Sound of Life

I was collecting wood for the fire one evening when I came across a piece of ash etched by a bark beetle. The embellishments were mesmerising. I brought the wood up to my studio and interrupted it's destiny of ending up as flames in the stove.

The wood sat for years in the corner of the studio until Nick Roth from Diatribe approached me to compose a piece for his Landscape series based on trees and woods.

Nature creates the most beautiful art. The patterns on my piece of ash were made by an adult beetle as she bored between the wood and the bark and layed her eggs as she burrowed along. When the eggs hatched, the young ones spread out from the central burrow and engraved beautiful patterns into the wood.

I used these beetle engravings as the graphic score for this composition. I thought about the beetle and nature: the dying ash trees disappearing all around me from the hedgerows and what prophecies a beetle might impart on us humans if we could listen.

The sounds for the piece were collaged together from field recordings of processing wood (chopping and sawing), collecting wood in the forest and gathering up sticks from my wood shed. There are recordings I have made on my pump organ, home piano, a short piece I recorded on a baby grand in Baltimore, MD, drones from an electric piano that I saved from the dump, field recordings I made in an instrument shop, snippets from cassette tapes, vocal texts I wrote about otherwordly experiences and other flotsam and jetsom gathering up along the way.

Released on Diatribe Records as part of the 'Landscape Series' which was produced by Nick Roth DIALOG039
